Sutter Smiles Dental Van

The Sutter County Smiles Mobile Dental Clinic is the result of an Oral health Initiative approved by the Sutter County Children & Families Commission in January 2004.

The Commission approved funding for the purchase of a Mobile Dental Clinic and five years of funding to support the program. Sutter County Smiles is a unique collaborative effort between three organizations:

  • The Sutter Children & Families Commission
  • The Yuba City Unified School District
  • Peach Tree Healthcare

The Yuba City Unified School District, through a grant from the Commission, provides a bilingual parent liaison, drivers for the clinic, mechanical and maintenance support, and a secure storage location for the van. Peach Tree Healthcare provides the dentist, registered dental assistant, dental supplies and processes insurance claims for services rendered.

Key program components:

  • Services are provided at school sites throughout Sutter County, Monday through Friday each week from 8a.m. – 5p.m. School site services lessen the amount of time children miss school and eliminate the transportation barrier for families.
  • The Clinic is a full scope dental practice providing:
    • Screenings
    • X-rays
    • Extractions
    • Fillings
    • Amalgam Crowns
    • Baby root canals
    • Stainless steel crowns
    • Sealants
    • Cleanings and fluoride
    • Dental Care Education
  • Outreach Coordinator and Parent Liaison (bilingual) to contact parents and school staff to identify children in need of dental care prior to the arrival of the clinic to each school site. These positions are critical to the success of the clinic, they link parents with the dental service and assist with the completion of health/dental history and consent forms.

Program achievements:

  • Dental services were provided to 700 children (April 05 - April 06), an increase of 360 children over the previous program year. Each child was seen an average of 4 times.
  • A total of 7,137 dental proceedures were provided (April 05 - April 06)
  • The Dental Clinic operated 178 full days and saw an average of 16 children per day
  • 61% of parents surveyed stated that their child would not have received dental services without the dental van, 48% stated that this was their child's first visit to a dentist.
  • 35% of children seen had no dental insurance
  • Winner of the 2006 County Care for Kids Award from the National Association of Counties

Program is evaluated each year by Duerr Evaluation Resources, 55 Hanover Lane, Chico, CA 95973

Statistics quoted from Annual Evaluation Report for 2005/2006 program year.

Through the unique partnership of Suter County Smiles, we are providing needed services to children who may not otherwise receive the service.

The unity of the partners has provided a strong operating base and assured that sharing the challenge of providing dental care to childen and working collaboratively toward the solution works very well in Sutter County and can cerve as a reliable model for many other jurisdictions.
